His landscape is characterised by its use of strong, clean colour, demonstrating a variety of techniques from skilfully controlled brush work to bold pallet knife application. The care and craftsmanship utilised in these paintings is apparent in the exciting compositions, in the unusual colour combinations, and in the care with which the paint is applied to the canvas.
“This is the second major exhibition of my work at Braemar Gallery. I am quite familiar with the area around Braemar, having done a bit of walking over the years, and so, when I was asked to produce the first exhibition (2006), I had in mind to paint the mountain, heather, rocks, snow and the feeling of space and solitude that you can get from the hills. I remember that it came as a bit of a surprise, when, about half way through that job, I realised just how many trees I was painting. I set out this time with a similar idea, but was again seduced by the glens and rivers around Braemar, which are beautifully wooded, broken by tumbling torrents and spectacular rocks. The old village too provides surprising views along its narrow criss-crossed streets and back lanes, with glimpses of the towering hills never far away.”
Wylie exhibits continually in a variety of private galleries across Scotland. He is a member of the Paisley Art Institute and contributes regularly to the annual exhibition, where he has been awarded prizes on two occasions. He is also a member of the co-operative of established painters in the Glasgow Group, which was established in 1957, and is the oldest artists co-operative group in Scotland.
